Before your first sugaring appointment: the prep checklist
First sugaring visit coming up? Good prep is the difference between a quick, comfortable session and a so-so one. Here’s exactly what I ask new clients to do.
1. Let it grow (a little)
Sugar can lift hair as short as 1/16 inch, which is one of the big reasons people switch from waxing. For a first visit, though, a bit more length helps. If you’ve been shaving, stop shaving the area and give it about two weeks to grow out. That way every hair is long enough to grab on the first pass.
Don’t trim it down yourself the night before. If anything needs trimming, I’ll do it in the room.
2. Skip lotion and oil that day
Sugar works by sticking to hair and dead skin. Lotion, body oil and heavy sunscreen get in the way. Come in with clean, dry skin.
3. Don’t work out right before
Sweaty, flushed skin is more sensitive and the paste doesn’t grip as well. Save the workout for another day, and skip it right after too.
Your first-visit timeline
| About 2 weeks before | Stop shaving the area |
| Day of | No lotion, oil or workout |
| Arrive | 10 minutes early for paperwork |
| Hair length that works | As short as 1/16 inch |
| Need to change it? | 24 hours’ notice |

4. Arrive ten minutes early
New clients fill out a short form about skin history, medications and allergies. Coming early means your full appointment time goes to your treatment, not the clipboard. Grab a refreshment and relax.
What happens in the room
I cleanse the area, then mold the sugar paste on at body temperature. It’s never hot. The sugar melts into the pores and wraps around each hair, then I flick it off in the direction the hair grows. Because the sugar can’t stick to live skin, I can go over an area again without irritating it.
Most first-timers tell me it was far easier than they expected, especially if they’ve been waxed before.
If something comes up
Your time is reserved just for you, so please give 24 hours’ notice to cancel or move it. If you’re sick, call and we’ll reschedule. We work in close quarters and want every client healthy.
Quick answers
How long should my hair be for sugaring?
Sugar can grab hair as short as 1/16 inch. For a first visit, stop shaving about two weeks ahead so every hair is long enough to remove on the first pass.
Can I put lotion on before sugaring?
No. Come in with clean, dry skin. Lotion and oil keep the sugar from gripping the hair.
Does sugaring hurt the first time?
Most clients find it gentler than waxing because the paste is never hot and doesn't stick to live skin. The first visit is usually the most noticeable, and it tends to get easier with regular appointments.
