Sugaring aftercare: the first 48 hours
Your follicles are open after sugaring. What you do for the next two days decides how smooth you stay. Here’s the aftercare I walk every client through.
The first 24 to 48 hours: keep it cool and clean
Freshly sugared skin is clean and a little more open than usual. For the first day or two, give it a break from heat, friction and bacteria:
- No hot tubs, saunas or steam rooms. Heat and shared water are the fastest way to get bumps.
- Hold off on hard workouts. Sweat sitting in open follicles can irritate them.
- Skip tanning and long sun sessions. Pacific Beach makes this one hard, I know. Cover up or wait a day.
- Wear loose, breathable clothes. Tight leggings rub and trap sweat.
- Keep your hands off. Touching and scratching brings bacteria to the area.
Aftercare at a glance
| Hours 0 to 48 | No heat, sweat, sun or tight clothes |
| After 48 hours | Start gentle exfoliation |
| Exfoliate | 2 to 3 times a week |
| Moisturize | Every day |
| Next appointment | Usually 4 to 6 weeks |

After 48 hours: exfoliate and hydrate
Once the first two days pass, the most important habit is gentle exfoliation two to three times a week. Dead skin is what traps new hairs under the surface and turns them into ingrowns. Exfoliating keeps the path open.
Follow with a daily moisturizer. Hydrated skin is softer, so new hair pushes through instead of curling back under.
Alexandria calls this the Full Circle of Skin Care: sugar, exfoliate, hydrate, repeat. We carry the home care products in our boutique, and I’m happy to show you what fits your skin.
Little red bumps?
Some redness or small bumps for a few hours after sugaring is normal, especially on a first visit or a sensitive area. If something looks irritated for more than a couple of days, give me a call.
Quick answers
When can I work out after sugaring?
Give it 24 to 48 hours. Sweat and friction on freshly sugared skin can irritate open follicles.
When should I start exfoliating after sugaring?
Wait about 48 hours, then exfoliate gently two to three times a week to help prevent ingrown hairs.
Can I go in the ocean after sugaring?
It's best to wait a day or two before long swims, hot tubs or sun exposure so the skin can settle.
